MySQL Related Books

In this section you can find some good books on MySQL. As a general policy, we don't list any books that we don't think are worth owning. We don't believe in negative book reviews: just because we don't like a book doesn't mean that someone won't appreciate it. Our book recommendations are grouped by the type of book and topic. This should make it easier for you to find a book suitable to your needs. Click on the heading for the section in which you're interested and you'll be shown a list of recommended books.

General MySQL Reference

These reference books are about all or nearly all of MySQL. There may be some specialized topics that are not included, but they cover the aspects of MySQL which are common to almost developers and administrators of MySQL. This grouping of books are primarily reference books, organized similarly to a dictionary. They may include brief tutorials and examples, but weren't intended to be read in page number order. Instead, you use them to look for information as you need it on a particular SQL statement or function.

MySQL Tutorials

These books are tutorials about MySQL. They're about MySQL in general and not about a specific aspect of MySQL. They're organized in a way in which one would typically read them in page number order, although they could later be used as a reference book.

MySQL Stored Routines

These books are either primarily about stored routines (i.e., user defined stored procedures and functions) in MySQL, or at least include a useful section on stored routines.

MySQL Replication

There aren't many books written about replication, so this book includes books that at least have a useful section on MySQL Replication.

MySQL Cluster

This section lists books on MySQL Cluster. This is still a new feature of MySQL, so there aren't many books published on the topic yet. Therefore, we've grouped all Cluster books together rather than separate reference from tutorial and other types.

Web & MySQL

The books in this category are probably in other categories. They explain how to use MySQL as a database for web sites. To do this, one would generally use an language like PHP or Perl as the interface.

Perl & MySQL

These books are either primarily about developing with Perl and MySQL, or have a section on Perl. This would typically include text on Perl DBI.

PHP & MySQL

These books are mostly about developing with PHP and MySQL. They also include some books that have a good PHP section related to MySQL

Unique Topics

These books are specialty books related to MySQL for which there may be only one book published in its category (e.g., certification study guide). Until we have more of the same kind, we're piling them in here.

MySQL columns: everywhere I look are tables and columns; life is filled with databases of information to be ordered and grouped.

MySQL in a Nutshell

If you work with MySQL regularly and need a book on the topic with an easy to follow writing style and helpful examples, please consider buying MySQL in a Nutshell. If you already have the first edition, the second edition recently came out: it’s much better than the first edition and has had some great reviews. Click on the cover art work here and you’ll be taken to Amazon’s site where you can purchase a copy and have it mailed to you.
